His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and Her Majesty Duli Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha binti Al-Marhum Pengiran Pemancha Pengiran Anak Haji Mohamad Alam yesterday consented to attend a reception hosted by the resident Heads of Diplomatic Missions assigned to Brunei Darussalam.
The reception which took place at the Royal Berkshire, Royal Brunei Polo and Riding Club in Jerudong was in conjunction with the 69th birthday celebration of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.
Upon arrival, His Majesty and Her Majesty were greeted by the High Commissioners and Ambassadors of friendly nations to Brunei Darussalam led by His Excellency Chhay Sokhan, the Ambassador of the Royal Embassy of Cambodia to Brunei Darussalam as the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps
Accompanying Their Majesties were His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, and Her Royal Highness Pengiran Anak Isteri Pengiran Anak Sarah binti Pengiran Haji Salleh Ab Rahaman; His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Her Royal Highness Pengiran Anak Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Zariah; and Her Royal Highness Princess Hajah Masna, Ambassador-at-Large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
Also in attendance was Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Lela Cheteria Sahibun Najabah Pengiran Anak Haji Abdul Aziz bin Pengiran Jaya Negara Pengiran Haji Abu Bakar.
In his welcoming address, His Excellency Chhay Sokhan thanked His Majesty and expressed the gratitude of the Diplomatic Corps for the opportunity to convey their birthday greetings to His Majesty. His Excellency Chhay Sokhan is also grateful for His Majesty’s leadership and the harmonious relationship that the members of Diplomatic Corps continue to enjoy.
His Majesty and Her Majesty then consented to receive a pasambah in the form of a special portrait of His Majesty featuring the 29 flags of the Diplomatic Missions assigned to the country.
The event portrayed the great respect and deep admiration for Their Majesties and other members of the royal family, government as well as the people of Brunei Darussalam for the hospitality, goodwill and friendship that have been extended to the diplomatic community in the country.
Brunei Darussalam’s declaration of full independence on January 1, 1984 and Brunei’s independence as a member of the United Nations (UN) has placed the country as a sovereign and independent nation, at par with other world nations. To date, the country has established diplomatic relations with 165 countries around the world.
A strong foreign policy constitutes an important element in strengthening relations and cooperation with other countries. Brunei Darussalam always practises the policy of friendly relations with other countries, and respects their rights without interfering in their internal affairs regardless of their ideologies, beliefs and race. With such a policy, the country is known to the world and has been successful in further strengthening and enhancing the existing relations.
The role played by Brunei Darussalam in the international arena under the leadership of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, has in effect, earned worldwide recognition for the nation as a vital component of the international community in securing the well-being of the world.
Since joining the United Nations and becoming a member of various regional and international organizations, Brunei Darussalam has remained committed to fulfilling its responsibility, and cooperated as well as provided assistance in order to achieve consensus in all decisions.
