Brunei Darussalam recorded 99 percent of clean air with a good PSI reading and 1 percent or 4 days of moderate readings between June 2018 and July 2019. The matter was stated by the Acting Director of Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation at the 21st Meeting of Technical Working Group on Transboundary Haze Pollution, 21st TWG. The meeting took place at the Rizqun International Hotel in Gadong.
Dayang Martinah binti Haji Tamit in her opening remarks said, for Brunei Darussalam, March 2019 has been a particularly dry spell towards the final phase of the northeast monsoon period with only about 58.9 millimetres of rainfall recorded, a massive drop from the 130 millimetres climate average for March. She added that between January and middle of March, 461 bush and forest fires were reported with almost a hundred fire and rescue personnel deployed to subdue the fires. In mid-April this year, a massive forest fire spanning over 100 hectares in size occurred at the Sarawak-Brunei border in the Kuala Baram District.
The 21st TWG meeting is hoped to achieve a concrete outcome and agreement that will report to the respective Minister, to be discussed at the Sub-Regional Ministerial Steering Committee on Transboundary Haze Pollution tomorrow.
