Telecommunications Service Outages

The Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam, AITI stressed that any person who wilfully removes, destroys or damages any installation or plant used for telecommunications shall be guilty of an offence and shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding 50 thousand dollar, imprisonment for a term not exceeding 3 years or both.

The reminder was issued following a recent telecommunications service outage that occurred in Kampung Rimba, Kampong Ayer and Edinburgh Bridge area which impacted services for over two thousand fixed and mobile network subscribers. According to AITI, the service disruptions were caused by damaged fibre cables and cable cuts due to theft. To date the nation has recorded an estimated total of 85 cable theft cases from January to December 2021 causing disruption to telecommunication services. Members of the public can also help in the efforts to stop the unlawful activities by contacting the Royal Brunei Police Force at 993 if they see any suspicious persons or activities in the vicinity where cables have been installed.
