Thousands of people crowded the area along the Tutong River Waterfront to see the ‘Festival Perayaan 69’ (69 Celebrations Festival). The event was held on Saturday in conjunction with His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s 69th Birthday celebration in the Tutong District.
In attendance was Yang Berhormat Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Othman, the Minister of Home Affairs.
Also present were Yang Dimuliakan Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yusof, the Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, Members of the Legislative Council, Deputy Permanent Secretaries at the Ministry of Home Affairs and Awang Wardi bin Haji Mohammad Ali, the Tutong District Officer as the Co-chairman of the celebrations committee.
The scene along Jalan Enche Awang in Tutong Town was bright and cheerful as a procession of Tutong’s community and ethnic groups passed by. 500 people took part in the procession comprising personnel of government agencies, members of Mukim and Village Consultative Councils, students, associations, public organisations and voluntary groups, as well as the Prisons Department’s Pipes and Drums Band.
A water floats procession was among the event’s main attractions. The festivities provided the local community and visitors from outside the district the opportunity to see Tutong from near and learn more about it. A fireworks display added more fun and cheer to Festival Perayaan 69.
Yang Berhormat Awang Haji Ramli bin Haji Lahit, Member of the Legislative Council said the festival gave members of the community, elders, youth and children alike the opportunity to work together in harmony, making lanterns and floats just like in the nostalgic nineteen seventies.
Meanwhile, Haji Muhammad Soffi bin Orang Kaya Seri Wijaya Haji Abdullah said the festival was a way to enliven the district. It also showed the people’s unity as they performed traditional dances and martial arts. The response was encouraging.
