His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, in a titah said the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly - AIPA represents the voice of the people in the ASEAN Communities and plays a crucial role in bridging the people with their respective governments. His Majesty made the titah in a message in conjunction with the 39th General Assembly of AIPA in Singapore. In the message, His Majesty also touched on the theme of this year's assembly, "Towards a Resilient and Innovative Community", which reflects the ongoing support of AIPA towards ASEAN aspirations.
His Majesty in the titah said through the membership of Brunei Darussalam in AIPA, the country is able to exercise a policy of friendship and mutual respect towards other nations. The Monarch expressed confidence that through this platform and the practice of multilateralism, Brunei Darussalam will be able to further foster its participation within regional and international organisations. Building human capacity and active entrepreneurship, especially amongst youth, His Majesty stressed, are essential foundations towards a resilient and innovative community. Similar to other ASEAN member states, Brunei Darussalam has boosted its efforts in creating an entrepreneur-centric community and improving the ease of doing business to facilitate youth innovation and professionalism, as well as building the capacity of micro and small and medium enterprises - MSME. On issues relating to illicit drugs in the region, His Majesty acknowledged that the AIPA Fact-Finding Committee (AIFOCOMM) which was established to Combat the Drug Menace and facilitate the collective efforts of the AIPA parliamentarians has now been changed to AIPA Inter-Parliamentary Assembly Advisory Council on Dangerous drugs (AIPACODD). It is hoped that the change will enable parliamentarians to better utilise the platform to move beyond fact-finding and continue to be the catalyst in fighting drug menace at all levels. His Majesty in the titah added that combating and actively tackling issues on illicit drugs is a common goal for all nations and plays an important role in ensuring alignment with ASEAN's 2016-2025 Work Plan on securing communities against illicit drugs.
