Universiti Teknologi Brunei's (UTB) Team UTB-ERT17, consisting of seven Engineering students and three supervisors left for Singapore today to participate in the Shell Eco-Marathon Asia (SEMA) 2017 competition which will be held from 15 to 19 March 2017 at the Changi Exhibition Centre. This is the second time that UTB is participating in SEMA. UTB's debut was at SEMA 2016 in Manila.
Present at the Brunei International Airport are Professor Dr Hjh Zohrah Binti Hj Sulaiman, UTB Vice-Chancellor and other Principal Officers of UTB.
Pahlawan III, which will be fielded this year, is an improved and more sophisticated version of Pahlawan II that competed in SEMA 2016. Taking inspiration from Jaguar's aluminium philosophy, it has improved aesthetics and built from stiffer, safer, stronger and more reliable materials. At 56kg, Pahlawan III is 22kg lighter than its predecessor. The motor, motor-controller and brake systems have also been significantly improved.
Shell Eco-Marathon is a competition for students who are passionate about developing innovative mobility solutions. It challenges engineering, design, science and technology students to design, build and drive the world's most energy-efficient vehicle. Apart from UTB, three other teams from UBD, Politeknik Brunei and IBTE are also competing with 120 other teams from Asia, including some from the Middle East and Australia. UTB is taking part in the Prototype category where Pahlawan III will be using electrical battery to run.
The team is supervised by Pg Dr Hj Mohd. Esa Al-Islam Bin Pg Hj Md. Yunus, Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Industry & Services) and Senior Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering; Haji Ismit bin Haji Mohammad, Lecturer in Electrical and Electronic Engineering; and Kamarudjaman bin Abu Bakar, Senior Lab Technician. The seven students are from the Mechanical Engineering and Electrical & Communication Engineering programmes.
