UTB WON THE CREATIVITY AWARD OF CAIEC 2022

The Creativity Award of the China-ASEAN Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition (CAIEC) 2022 was won by the Smart ACT team from Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB). The ASEAN winners of the CAIEC 2022 gathered virtually this morning to celebrate. The competition’s theme for this year is ‘Innovation Cooperation for a Shared Future’.

The event was hosted by the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of China and ASEAN Secretariat. It was organised by the ASEAN Committee on Science, Technology, and Innovation (COSTI), along with the Department of International Cooperation of the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Department of Science and Technology of Guanxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The event was supported by the Guanxi Institute of Industrial Technology.

The competition was open to universities, institutes, enterprises, and other social organisations from China and ASEAN. Participants were divided into enterprise and team groups and assigned to work on projects in four different fields: Modern Agriculture, Energy Conservation and Environmental Protection, Digital Economy, and Biomedical and Health. Fifteen judges, including ten chairpersons from ASEAN Member States, were appointed to evaluate each project based on criteria such as technical products, innovation value, industry market, future development, business model, implementation plan, group situation, financial analysis, and presentation.

UTB Smart ACT team was led by Dr. Lim Tiong Hoo, who is a Senior Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Engineering and the Director of the Planning Development Office. Other team members include Dr. Aida Maryam Haji Basri, Lecturer in the School of Applied Sciences and Mathematics, specialising in Food Science and Technology; Dk Norhafizah Binti Pg Hj Muhammad, Lecturer in the Faculty of Engineering; and Mr. Chang Jin Herng, a third-year student in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

On 28 November last year, 71 teams from China and ASEAN member states presented their business proposals both virtually and in-person in Bangkok, Thailand. Among them, the UTB Smart ACT team presented their business solution in the Modern Architecture project field as part of the Team group. Their business start-up plan, titled ‘Smart AquaCulture Systems (Smart ACT),’ is designed to assist farmers in monitoring culture growth and managing farms using the Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

On behalf of the Brunei team, the award was received by Yang Mulia Nurul Syadirah Awang Sayang, who is the Chargé d’affaires of Brunei Darussalam in Jakarta. The award was presented by His Excellency Satvinder Singh, the Deputy Secretary-General for ASEAN Economic Community, and Her Excellency Hou Yanqi, who is the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to ASEAN.
