Various Forms of Challenges

The country is still faced with various forms of challenges. Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia Doctor Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong, the Minister of Home Affairs in his adjournment speech yesterday, said the government's fiscal position which experiences a high amount of deficit and the uncertain global economic climate, all leave an impact to Brunei Darussalam.

Yang Berhormat Pehin said the government's high level of commitment has successfully attracted foreign investors into the country, and added that the government will continue to strive to provide a conducive ecosystem with a view of making the country an interesting FDI destination, as part of efforts to diversify the country's economic source. Yang Berhormat Pehin pointed out that the presence of FDI companies have undoubtedly contributed towards the country's economic growth, adding that the 17 companies which are already operational have provided employment for 1321 locals or 58 % from the total number of workers.

Touching on several government sectors, Yang Berhormat Pehin explained that the country still has a high ratio of foreign workers, and based on the 2015 employers and employees census, there are 82 thousand 739 foreign workers in the country from 19 sectors. Providing a breakdown of this, Yang Berhormat Pehin said there are 64 % in the agriculture sector, 78 % in the fisheries and forestry sector, manufacturing - 79 %, construction - 87 % and the food and accommodation - 70 %. Yang Berhormat Pehin said the country is still lacking skilled and experienced workforce in certain fields, which is why the country still needs assistance from foreign countries to carry out these works, in order to make the country more competitive and is not meant to neglect the local workforce. This is where there is a need for local workers to fill these areas, with continuous training and guidance to hone and enhance skills in line with the localisation of workforce in the country. This is one of the strategic focuses which is human capital and capacity building.
