A number of major agricultural sites in the Belait District became the focus of a visit by a group of legislators. The visit by Members of the Legislative Council to the district is to learn more about the agricultural industry and related development.
The 12-member delegation was joined by Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ali bin Apong, Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism. The tour began at the Syarikat Pertanian Tropikal Utama, owned by Awang Yong Khian Fook. Located at the Rampayoh agriculture development area in Mukim Labi, the plantation is filled with coffee trees and various species of fruits. Awang Yong opened the farm in 1995.
Syarikat Norajijah Plantation Sedirian Berhad in KKP Merangking was another stop-over for the visitors. The company is a joint venture between local businessmen and Malaysian investors. Although they just started business in 2017, their efforts have borne fruits. The farm is mostly producing seasonal and non-seasonal fruits.
Also at the KKP Merangking, the delegates toured the Asia Enterprise plantation. The company is owned by Awang Chai Yum Fatt. Starting as what was called a pioneer project, it was fully operational in January 2017 by specialising in fruit production using the multi-tier farming system.
The last stop was at the Kandol Paddy Plantation. The delegates ended their visit at the Tropical Biodiversity Centre for a question and answer session. The delegation also included Pengiran Kamalrudzaman bin Pengiran Haji Mohd Ishak, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism.
