The First Meeting of the 14th Session of the Legislative Council on its second day yesterday passed the motions of votes of thanks towards His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam for gracing the Opening Ceremony of the council's first meeting yesterday. Prior to deliberations, Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Lela Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdul Rahman bin Dato Setia Haji Mohamed Taib, Speaker of the Legislative Council in his address among other matters gave his motion of vote of thanks for His Majesty's presence and touched on the Monarch's titah on the need of economic diversification so that the country does not continuously depend on oil and gas revenues, and to focus on agriculture.
According to Yang Berhormat Pehin, His Majesty is far-sighted and urges us all to propose substantial matters for sustainable economic development, so that we do not continuously depend on oil and gas revenues, and the need for economic diversification. This includes focusing on agriculture as reiterated by His Majesty that agriculture is vital to be more effective as it has a significant value as well as an in-depth effect on the continuity and well-being of life and the people. Therefore, Legislative Council members are responsible to work together collectively in together contributing towards the development of Brunei Darussalam.
