World Environment Day Celebration

The World Environment Day becomes a platform for the public’s involvement in raising awareness and taking action in protecting the environment, either individually or collectively, be it at the national, regional and international level. The Minister of Development said that this year marks the start of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration that runs until 2030, a call for global community to protect and restore all ecosystems throughout the world by ceasing ecosystem degradation and starting as well as increasing universal restoration works. Speaking at the World Environment Day celebration, Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Ingenieur Awang Haji Suhaimi bin Haji Gafar stressed that Brunei Darussalam is still blessed with rich flora and fauna as well as sustainable ecosystem. A stable and health biosphere will lead to a healthy society.

The Minister of Development stated that it is our responsibility to not be negligent in protecting the environment, and at the same time continue to enhance economic growth and the country’s development. This effort, Yang Berhormat added, requires cooperation from all levels of society to play their respective role through the Whole of Nation Approach. The Minister of Development added that among the methods to protect and restore the environment proactively include nature-based solutions, the use of green technology and green practices, and reactive methods including ecosystem restoration.

The event coincided with the launching of ‘Towards Achieving an Eco Country’ roadshow, the Tree Planting Guidebook and the Nationwide Cleaning Campaign under the Cleanliness Issue Main Committee that will commence on the 13th of June. At the event, winners of the Floating Waste Collector Conceptual Design competition received their prizes. The Categori A for Skimmer Boat was won by UBDFIT from Universiti Brunei Darussalam, while Category B for Floating Trapping Mechanism went to SIMPUR from Universiti Teknologi Brunei. Among those present were Dato Seri Paduka Architect Awang Haji Marzuke bin Haji Mohsin, Deputy Minister of Development and foreign dignitaries. The roadshow is open to the public until today from 10 in the morning to 5 in the afternoon at the Ministry of Development’s lobby.
