290 new cases for hearing loss problem have been detected in the country last year. From this number, 4 cases occurred in small children, 32 cases among children aged between 1 to 14 years old, 121 cases among those aged between 15 to 64 years old and 133 cases among senior citizens aged 65 years and above. Yang Berhormat Dato Paduka Doctor Haji Mohd Isham Bin Haji Jaafar, Minister of Health disclosed the matter during the World Hearing Day 2018 celebration yesterday morning at Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar Ali Saifuddien.
In his speech, Yang Berhormat Dato Paduka Doktor Haji Mohd Isham said that the challenge for individuals who face hearing loss problems as well as the families involved are due to a lack of awareness on such issues including prevention; access to treatment and cure; access for education and issues related to their integration into the community. The Minister of Health also highlighted that globally, hearing loss is a sensory problem with the highest number. Currently, 360 million people worldwide face hearing loss problems, where 32 million of them are children.
The World Hearing Day is celebrated every 3rd of March in efforts to support the World Health Organisation, WHO, to raise awareness on ways to prevent hearing loss and also promote ear and hearing care. Themed "Hear the Future, Prepare for it", the celebration was organised by the Otorhinolaryngology Department, Ministry of Health.
At the event, the Minister of Health also presented certificates of appreciation to participants of the roadshow in conjunction with World Hearing Day. Among the contents of the roadshow is the current framework to address health, education and social problems related to hearing which are provided by several ministries and non-governmental agencies who work together to raise public awareness on hearing problems in the country. Ear and hearing care need a holistic and inclusive approach to ensure all relevant parties provide an integrated care to fulfil all the needs of individuals with such problem.
