The importance of sustainable health care financing using practical and innovative financing methods only need to be in line with the economic climate aside from taking into account cultural and social values in ASEAN member countries. The matter was voiced by the Minister of Health in his speech at the 14th ASEAN Health Ministers Meeting. Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Haji Mohammad Isham bin Haji Jaafar also urged that basic health care also needs to be given priority as it is the gatekeeper to diseases aside from giving access to comprehensive care. Yang Berhormat further explained that cooperation in health development need to be continued through exchange of views as well as information on the success and challenges in health financing. The 2-day 14th ASEAN Health Ministers Meeting And Related Meetings was held in Siem Reap, Cambodia started on 29th this month.
The meeting themed 'Accelerating Health for All in ASEAN' is aimed as a platform for strategic discussions on the direction and priority fields in health which need to be given attention in the ASEAN region. The Agreement on the Establishment of ASEAN Center for Active Ageing and Innovation, ACAI was signed to establish an ASEAN Centre for Active Ageing and Innovation which will be operational in Thailand.
Also held was the 8th ASEAN Plus Three Health Ministers Meeting which discussed the improvement of health cooperation between ASEAN and three other countries namely the People's Republic of China, Republic of Korea and Japan including cooperation in tackling emerging diseases, Universal Health Coverage and Mother and Child Health. Meanwhile, the 7th ASEAN-China Health Ministers Meeting focused on the topic of strengthening capacity to implement International Health Regulations through the Asia Pacific Strategy on Emerging Diseases and Public Health Emergencies.
While in Cambodia, Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doktor Haji Mohammad Isham also held a bilateral meeting with The Honourable Professor Mam Bunheng, Minister of Health of Cambodia. During the meeting, both parties held discussions as well as exchanged views on the development of the field of health in the respective countries.
