The establishment of the Brunei Branch Al-Azhar International Rabitah Alumni aims to unite former students of the Al-Azhar University and other institutions under the university patronage in the Arab Republic of Egypt. The Alumni will also serves as a platform in forging closer rapport with the Rabitah at the centre and international and levels, as well giving the extra miles for the muslims and the nation.
This was explained by Yang Berhormat Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman, the Minister of Religious Affairs, at the first General Meeting of the Brunei Al-Azhar International Rabitah Alumni. According to the Minister of Religious Affairs who is also the Chairman of the Board of Advisory, 60 people have become members of the Alumni. The membership is 10-percent less than the overall number of former students. In this regard, Yang Berhormat Pehin called on the Alumni to attract more people to join the association.
The meeting was chaired by Dato Seri Setia Haji Abdul Aziz bin Orang Kaya Maharaja Lela Haji Yussof, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Religious Affairs. Among other matters, he expressed hope that the association would be active in organising knowledge-based programs. He also would like to see the Alumni members to serve the community through the short and long-tern social, economic and culture activities and other programs. Earlier, the meeting elected the Rabitah Executive Committee members. Since 1963, the Al-Azhar University in Egypt has produced some 650 Brunei graduates.
