His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office yesterday morning consented to officiate the Brunei Info-Communications Technology Award, BICTA 2018. The ceremony took place at the International Convention Centre in Berakas.
Upon arriving, His Royal Highness, the Royal Patron of BICTA was greeted by Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Abdul Mutalib bin Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Dato Paduka Haji Mohammad Yusof, the Minister of Communications, Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Matsatejo bin Sokiaw, the Deputy Minister of Energy (Energy and Manpower) and Industry as the Chairman of Authority for Info-Communication Technology Industry, AITI, Awang Haji Azhar bin Haji Ahmad, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Communications as the Co-Chairman of BICTA 2018 Steering Committee and Sheikh Haji Abbas Sheikh Mohamad, the Chairman of InfoCom Federation of Brunei, IFB, as the 2nd Co-Chairman of the BICTA 2018 Steering Committee.
The event began with the reading of Surah Al-Fatihah and Doa’ Selamat led by Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Imam Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Hamid bin Bakal.
In his welcoming address, Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Abdul Mutalib among other things highlighted the objective of BICTA to encourage innovation and act a benchmark for the development of local ICT products.
BICTA 2018 is the result of solid cooperation among the Ministry of Communications, the AITI and InfoCom Federation of Brunei. Its aim is to simulate innovation and creativity in the ICT Industry among individuals and organisations, especially students and Small and Medium Enterprises, SMEs as well as providing the benchmark for local ICT products development.
During the ceremony, His Royal Highness presented Certificates of Appreciation to 16 judges from government agencies, academics, ICT organisations and professional expert bodies of the respective fields. His Royal Highness also presented a Certificate of Appreciation to the BICTA workshop speaker.
His Royal Highness then presented BICTA 2018 Awards in the various categories. For the Schools Project Category, Saint John’s School from Kuala Belait won with the Hope Mental Health Application. The champion received a Trophy, certificate and 3 thousand dollars in cash.
A project by Universiti Teknologi Brunei students named “MECHSIM” won the Higher Studies Project category. It is a virtual reality technology product that runs mechanical installation simulation. The winner received a Trophy, certificate and a 7 thousand dollar Grant to develop the product.
The ICT Industry Project Category was won by MINDPLUS Sendirian Berhad with its Mindtrex application. The product has the capability to help individual students all over the world by providing concentrated learning system using artificial intelligence technology. The champion received a Trophy, certificate and a 10 thousand dollar Grant to develop the product.
His Royal Highness then presented three special Awards. The Project Research and Development Award was won by Universiti Teknologi Brunei with its “SMARTFARM” which uses the Internet of Things, IOT technology to detect, determine and treat plants diseases.
The DROPLET application by Universiti Brunei Darussalam uses IOT technology to record rainfall. It received the IOT Award.
The Start-Up Award was given to Aqli Enterprise who presented a Smart Search application capable of searching for and finding entrepreneurs in the customers’ areas. Recipients of the Special Awards each received a certificate and a Trophy.
MINDPLUS Sendirian Berhad with its Mindtrex project was chosen for the Royal Patron’s Award from His Royal Highness. The prestigious award is given biennially to the best overall winner in all categories.
His Royal highness then viewed the exhibition which showcased all the BITCA winning products. The theme of BICTA 2018, ‘Visionary Digital Generation’ reflects a resilient generation which is aware of the latest technological development and strives to produce innovative solutions. Innovation in ICT is the pillar of a country’s economic and social development. Almost 50 percent of products received by the organisers this year are from institutions of higher learning and involved mostly youths.
The winners will represent the country at the Asia-Pacific Info-Communications Technology Award in Guangzhou, China in October this year. Brunei Darussalam has achieved 2 awards and 17 merits since taking part in APICTA in 2008. Through APICTA, the winners will be able to build and improve their cooperation networks for promoting ICT, innovation, capabilities and usage as well as to encourage the development of ICT solutions for the global markets.
The presence of His Royal Highness at the event is a great motivator for the local ICT activists, enthusiasts and youths to continue their competitive spirit, skills and innovation.
