Changes in Hari Raya Celebrations Reflect Globalisation’s Impact

However, every year the celebration is not spared from experiencing changes along with the passage of time. The development of globalisation has changed human life. This is no exception to the impact on the tradition of Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration.

According to Radio Television Brunei, Raya cards once became very popular as a communication tool to convey Hari Raya greetings. Various types and sizes of cards, and there are also Hari Raya cards equipped with music, were an option. Now, the use of Raya cards is replaced by the use of technology to produce videos and posters or Raya cards digitally.

Touching on raya attires, a few months before Ramadhan, people have started to be busy looking for choice fabrics to make baju kurung, kebaya, and traditional Cara Melayu attires. Ready-made raya attires are now also an option, since they can be obtained at the last minute.

Oil lamps installed around the house clearly enlivened the atmosphere of Hari Raya in the past. They were made by themselves using milk cans or bamboo. Currently, it is still used, but matched with modern colourful lights.

Raya cakes are also no exception to the change, with now various types of cakes and delicacies produced and easily available. However, modern and traditional cakes are still a choice, including Kueh Mor.

Despite the passage of time, the tradition of Hari Raya should not be forgotten so that it remains meaningful for future generations.
