Customs Offence

A local man was sentenced by the Bandar Seri Begawan Magistrate's Court for an offence under the Excise Order.

58-year-old, Awang Ibrahim bin Awang Besar was sentenced to 3 years imprisonment in default of a fine of 930,000 dollars. He was found in possession of 1,190 cartons of various brands of cigarettes in a car during an inspection conducted by officers at Kampung Mentiri National Housing Scheme.

Meanwhile, a male permanent resident was sentenced by the Kuala Belait Magistrate Court for an offence under the Excise Order. 41-year-old, Yong Juinn Hua was found guilty of possessing 8 cartons of various brands of cigarettes. The items were found in a car at the Sungai Tujoh Customs Control Post. The offender pleaded guilty and was fined 6,400 dollars or 6 months imprisonment in default. He was ordered to pay the fine in increments of 250 dollars every month starting at the end of October until the fine is settled. The contraband is seized to be destroyed.
