Bandar Seri Begawan: The number of khalwat or close-proximity cases under the Syariah Penal Code Order in 2024 decreased significantly, with 294 cases reported compared to 432 in 2023. This was highlighted by the Chief Syar'ie Judge during the Syariah Court Officials Annual Assembly 2025. Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Paduka Seri Utama Dato Paduka Seri Setia Haji Awang Salim bin Haji Besar pointed out that while there is a decrease, the current numbers remain a concern as they indicate ongoing offences among Muslims. The assembly was held at the Syariah Court in the Capital on the morning of January 25th.
According to Radio Television Brunei, the Chief Syar'ie Judge emphasized that despite perceptions of leniency in punishment for khalwat offences, neglecting these incidents could lead to more severe immoral acts such as adultery and illicit intercourse, which carry heavier penalties.
The assembly also featured a Certificate Presentation and the Joint Chief Judge's Trophy for 2024. This event recognized the contributions of retired officers and staff of the Syariah Courts and served to appreciate the services rendered throughout the past year. Additionally, the ceremony was an opportunity to review the Syariah Courts' achievements in 2024 and discuss strategic planning for 2025.
