The Universiti Brunei Darussalam, UBD curriculum is designed to nurture good communication and reasoning skills, critical thinking, creativity and resourcefulness. Integral to UBD programmes are the principles of leadership, innovation, environmental awareness and entrepreneurship all enveloped by the national philosophy of Malay Islamic Monarchy, MIB. Speaking at UBD Fresher's week for the August 2017 Intake, Datin Doctor Hajah Anita Binurul Zahrina binti Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Wijaya Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Abdul Aziz, the Vice-Chancellor of UBD said that for the UBD Bachelor Degree Programmes, the mandatory year out of the university called the Discovery Year will provide the student more experiential learning by having the opportunity to study abroad, internship, initiate an innovation and incubation project, or be involved in a community outreach programme.
Some 1,124 students including international students were welcomed by UBD for the first semester of the academic year 2017/2018. The Fresher's week is an event where new students are briefed on important matters related to life in the university and what UBD has to offer.
