The No Plastic Bag Everyday initiative has shown a positive impact with a decline in the usage of plastic bags by 12 per cent since its introduction in April last year. Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suhaimi bin Haji Gafar said the initiative aims to prevent pollution from plastic materials aside from cultivating awareness and culture among community in the country on the importance of preserving the environment. The Minister of Development said the matter in response to a question raised by Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Imam Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Hamid bin Bakal on other alternatives to replace plastic bag in the country.
Regarding replacement or other alternatives to plastic bag, the Minister said it depends on the consumer or business owner as the objective is to reduce the use of plastic bag using the reuse or recycle method. So far, the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation is not stopping business premises from using environment friendly alternatives such as paper bags and the department also strives to explore other alternatives such as biodegradable plastic bags.
