It is not Obligatory to Perform the Friday Prayer for Those who are Unwell

Yang Berhormat Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin Bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Osman, the Minister of Religious Affairs, in the media conference touched on Islam's view on the Friday prayer for those who are unwell as well as mass gatherings.

Yang Berhormat Pehin said the Ministry of Religious Affairs stated that as it could be harmful for the infected person and others, for example, if he was already identified as symptomatic and under the hospital's control, automatically it is not obligatory for him to go to the mosque. For those not showing symptoms but are having fever, coughs and colds which is still not categorized as symptomatic, thus they are also not obligated to go to the mosque to perform the Friday prayer. This is also true for those under quarantine. Even if the number of congregants reaches 40 people, as those under quarantine in a sports complex, it is not obligatory for them to perform the Friday prayer. Firstly because they are under quarantine with some who are ill, and secondly the place for prayer must be at the mosque or surau or a place assigned by the authorities. However, they are still obligated to perform the five times daily prayers. In terms of celebratory events, especially in view of the early closure of schools for the term holiday, the matter must be referred to the authorities, in particular where the event is held in public places such as halls, mosques and such.

In Islam's point of view, if the authorities, for example the Ministry of Health has issued orders whether they can or cannot hold the event, then such orders MUST be obeyed as the Ministry of Health is acting, in this case, on the commands of the monarch. As part of administrative measures, the Ministry of Religious Affairs advises imams or prayer leaders for tomorrow's Friday prayer to recite only verses that are short, so that the prayer can be concluded faster. This is also true for the Friday Sermon, which the minister has requested to be shortened. The mosques will also provide sanitizers for use at mosque entrances and mosques will undergo sanitising procedures after the prayer.
