Support from the husband, family members, workplace and the society is important in helping to raise the rate of breastfeeding. Apart from encouraging the culture of breastfeeding and giving positive impact to family relations, husband's involvement in breastfeeding matters will stimulate the infant's growth. The Minister of Health was speaking during the launch of World Breastfeeding Week 2019 yesterday morning.
Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Haji Mohammad Isham bin Haji Jaafar stressed that the Ministry of Health and the public will not take lightly on the issue of promoting, supporting and instilling the culture of breastfeeding among parents and families in the country. A holistic approach towards providing initiatives to encourage breastfeeding involving parents such as co-parenting workshop will help husband and wife to cooperate in fulfilling their task and responsibility as parents. Such initiative will make husband and wife become confident and ease them in providing the best start for their infant. The Minister of Health added, non-governmental organisation or NGO's also plays a vital role in promoting and organising such initiatives.
The Minister of Health also called on all stakeholders including the government, the private sector, professional bodies and department store owners to work together and give commitment as well as support among one another to encourage breastfeeding practices. Among the initiative that required attention from all parties include the provision of breastfeeding rooms in public area including work places and shopping malls.
At the function, Yang Berhormat launched a book titled 'The Code of Practice for Health Workers on Ending Inappropriate Marketing of Foods and Related Products For Infants and Young Children (0-5 years) in Brunei Darussalam.' The book contains guideline on code of practise for health workers in protecting the practice of breastfeeding.
The culture of breastfeeding has various benefits for mothers and infants in the short and long run. Dr Hajah Rohayati binti Haji Mohd. Taib, Pediatric Consultants at Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha Hospital in her speech entitled "Protecting Infant Health - The Health Worker's Code", stressed that breast milk is a unique and perfect nutrition that can fulfilled the infants' nutrition need and enhance children's immunity system.
Themed 'Empower Parents, Enable Breastfeeding', the World Breastfeeding Week 2019 stresses on three main roles namely to protect, promote and support the practices of World Breastfeeding Week. They are: Policies and regulations to protect the welfare of parents; parent-friendly work environment either at formal or non-formal work sector; as well as parent-friendly values and equality in parenting.
