Starting from Thursday, department stores and businesses taking part in the 'No Plastic Bag Weekend' initiative will no longer issue plastic bags every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The addition of Thursday is an initiative of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam's government through the Department of Environment, Park and Recreation, JASTRe, in pushing for the use of reusable bags every day, and achieve the target of reducing wastes at disposal sites.
Speaking at the media conference yesterday morning, the Acting Permanent Secretary for Administration and Finance at the Ministry of Development said the initiative also aims to reduce the number of waste per capita from 1 point 4 kilograms to 1 kilogram per capita by 2035. Doctor Nor Imtihan binti Haji Abdul Razak also shared that research carried out by JASTRe in 2015 to evaluate the effectiveness of no plastic bag has showed that 80 percent of more than 1 thousand respondent supported the initiative. Meanwhile, 20 percent of the respondent shared that they used recycling bag on daily basis.
According to Doctor Nor Imtihan, JASTRE will be implementing zero plastic bag usage in stages starting 1st January 2019. The additional of Wednesday without plastic bag will begin this July; on Tuesday starting this October and on Monday at the end of this December. The initiative also involved department stores and businesses taking part in the 'No Plastic Bag Weekend' initiative, and will be extended to plastic bag users such as grocery stores, restaurant and food stalls nationwide.
