M'sian Chinese Pleads Guilty to Smuggling Cigarettes (BruDirect (Brunei))

A 34-year-old Malaysian man will be serving 20 months’ jail if he fails to pay a $108,000 fine imposed by the Bandar Seri Begawan Magistrate’s Court following his guilty plea to smuggling cigarettes.

Liew Lik Kiong was found keeping 298 cartons of cigarettes at a furniture factory in Kampong Kilanas where he works, Magistrate Dewi Norlelawati binti Haji Abdul Hamid heard from the Customs prosecutor. Customs officers discovered the cigarettes in one of the workers’ cabinets during an inspection at the business premises.

The defendant admitted to having bought the cigarettes in Limbang in order to sell them in Brunei. He also had not declared the cigarettes on importation. The magistrate ordered the cigarettes to be forfeited and dealt with as deemed fit by the Customs Controller.
