According to data from the Tourism Development Department, the number of tourist arrivals at the end of last year has increased up to 10 percent, compared to point 3 percent in 2016. The positive growth is due to the new product initiatives, among them the Bandar Seri Begawan and Kampong Ayer heritage trails tourism packages and the Tutong, Belait and Temburong Holiday Destination packages.
Speaking at the opening of the International Tourism Conference and Exhibition, Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ali bin Apong, Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism said that the introduction of activity based tourism products identified in the Tourism Development Department's strategic plans and constantly improving the quality of tourism services and facilities, the Ministry strives towards a positive direction in achieving the objective of increasing the number of visiting tourists to the country.
Professor T. Victor King, from Universiti Brunei Darussalam, in his keynote speech said that tourism is seen as an agent and mechanism for promoting regional interconnections, though there are obviously positive and negative consequences of tourism development on a regional basis. The 2-day conference gathers representatives from the tourism industry with specialists in tourism research from UBD and other institutions. It is hoped that this will provide a platform for the further expansion of tourism both here in Brunei and in the spirit of regional cooperation in the neighbouring Borneo states as well.
