Efforts to reduce fire incidents need cooperation in various components. In line with the Government's role towards Ease of Doing Business, the Fire and Rescue Department has reviewed the existing procedures to ensure they would not obstruct the initiative. According to the Minister of Home Affairs, one such initiative is Outsourcing Fire Inspection using the Public-Private Partnership method. Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia Doctor Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong underlined the matter during the Parade in conjunction with the Fire and Rescue Department's 57th anniversary yesterday.
This year's celebration is held simultaneously with the International Firefighters' Day which falls in May. At the ceremony, Yang Berhormat Pehin received the salute and inspected a guard of honour mounted by 90 personnel, who showcased the everyday operational attires for responding to operational calls, the full attire for fire fighting as well as the work attire for official events within and outside the department.
The Minister of Home Affairs in his speech stated that throughout last year, a total of 130 fire incidents involving buildings and houses were recorded with estimated losses amounting to 7.6 million dollars, while the value of assets that were managed to be saved stood at 16 million dollars. Yang Berhormat Pehin added that the Fire and Rescue Department has also responded to 5,488 emergency incidents.
The ceremony coincided with the presentation of the Exemplary Personnel and Staff Award to 30 recipients who have been evaluated based on a number of criteria. Among them are their period of service, performances in the last 3 years, main duties as well as leadership. The overall Exemplary Station Award was won by the SPARK Fire Station; second place went to the Women Operation Unit Fire Station, while the Temasek Fire Station was placed third.
Meanwhile, 20 people received the Community Meritorious Award. They comprise members of the public, representatives from government departments, schools and private companies. Since 2007, the Fire and Rescue Department has celebrated its anniversary of establishment on every 9th of March, which marks the department's name change from the Fire Services Department to the Fire and Rescue Department.
