In reference to Media Permata report on 5th December 2016 title "Pekerja Kapal Di Percayai Lemas" (Marine crew is believed drown), the Energy and Industry Department, Prime Minister Office (EIDPMO) would like to informed that the incident involved a local marine crew working for QESS Sdn Bhd, a service provider to the Brunei Oil and Gas Sector.
It was reported that just after 6.41 pm on 3rd December 2016, the crew fell into the Belait River after the wooden plank, he stepped onto, broke while in the process of fixing another plank between two berthed marine vessels. The incident happened at the QESS Sdn Bhd's Rasau jetty and not while carrying out a Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP) activity. Search and Rescue operations were conducted immediately with assistance from other nearby vessels and the personnel from Royal Brunei Police and Fire and Rescue Department. The body of the deceased was found around 1.15 pm on the 5th December 2016.
The EIDPMO Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) team will work with the other relevant agencies such as the Marine Department, Royal Police Force and the Fire and Rescue Department to investigate the root cause of the incident to ensure there is no recurrence. An independent investigation will be led by EIDPMO to ascertain if there is any breach of the Workplace Safety and Health Order (WHSO). If there is non-compliance, the contractor can be prosecuted under the WSHO.
The EIDPMO would like to remind all marine operators and companies especially those who are working in the Brunei Oil and Gas Sector to ensure the safety of the people is given top priority by ensuring HSE procedures are followed when carrying out their tasks.
