RAKIS Club Showcases Folklore Sketches to Engage Children in Brunei

Berakas: Folklore refers to the shared stories or customs that are passed down through generations, most commonly by word of mouth. Various efforts have been made to preserve such heritage. Recognising the importance of preserving folklore stories, the RAKIS Club of Universiti Brunei Darussalam recently held a Folklore sketch “Si Penunggu Gaung Nibung” and “Si Awang Sumbilang” which aimed to attract children’s interest in folk literature. The performance was held during the Book Fair 2025 at the International Conference Centre, Berakas.

According to Radio Television Brunei, the taboos in Dusun marriages were expressed through the sketch “Si Penunggu Gaung Nibung”. These taboos still remain to this day.

The sketch of ‘Si Awang Sembilang’ shared the story of a married couple who make a living by gardening and fishing.

Folklore serves as a vital form of cultural heritage, preserving historical context and transmitting moral and social values through stories that teach important lessons.
