RECENT DEVELOPMENT IN MALAYSIA’S MARITIME AREAS IN THE SOUTH CHINA SEA

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia would like to confirm news reports that a large number of Chinese-flagged fishing boats were sighted in Malaysia's maritime areas in the South China Sea.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia would also like to inform that based on reports received from the relevant Malaysia's authorities, the Chinese-flagged fishing boats, while navigating in Malaysia's maritime areas in the South China Sea, were accompanied by Chinese Coast Guard vessel.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia have called in His Excellency Dr. Huang Huikang, Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to Malaysia to the Ministry on 31 March 2016 to seek clarification as well as to register Malaysia's concerns over the matter.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia firmly believes that China shares and reciprocates the sentiment that the close, extensive and deep-rooted friendship between Malaysia and China which have been elevated to a comprehensive strategic partnership, are anchored on mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, mutual non-aggression, non-interference in each other internal affairs, equality and mutual benefit, and peaceful co-existence. In this connection, Malaysia is confident that with goodwill and sincerity, Malaysia and China would be able to find amicable resolution on any issues between both countries.
