Speaker of Legislative Council Receives Courtesy Calls

The Speaker of the Legislative Council today received separate courtesy calls from three foreign envoys in the country. The courtesy calls were held at the Legislative Council Building.

Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Lela Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdul Rahman bin Dato Setia Haji Mohamed Taib received courtesy calls from His Excellency Retired Major General Abdul Aziz Tariq, High Commissioner of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan to the country; Her Excellency Homeira Rigi, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Brunei Darussalam; and His Excellency Christopher B. Montero, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of the Philippines to the country.

During the courtesy calls, Yang Berhormat and the foreign envoys exchanged views on the parliament system, as well as the increasing involvement of women in parliament and in relevant posts. The courtesy call also saw an agreement on the view that interactions or exchanges between the people is vital in enhancing cooperation and good relations, as well as further expanding efforts in other fields such as agriculture and tourism. Yang Berhormat and the foreign envoys also discussed the importance of a country becoming sustainable, particularly in agriculture.

Cooperation in tourism was also discussed. The tourism industry is important and needs to be developed in line with the establishment of facilities such as developments in transportation. Matters such as visa exemption should be seriously considered for the tourism development efforts. Also discussed were efforts to enhance Islamic tourism by providing halal eateries and other facilities for Muslim tourists.
