The role of higher education institution is increasingly challenging. They are not only viewed as knowledge hubs that are able to service the nation’s growing demand for human resource, but it also has a great responsibility in ensuring that the graduates produced are of the highest quality. According to Professor Doctor Hajah Zohrah binti Haji Sulaiman, Vice Chancellor of Universiti Teknologi Brunei, quality graduates are product of excellent teachers, researchers and university’s conducive environment for teaching and learning.
The Vice Chancellor of UTB made the speech at the UTB Staff Excellence Award Ceremony 2018 and Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and Industry Collaboration, yesterday morning.
In attendance was Yang Berhormat Dato Paduka Awang Haji Hamzah bin Haji Sulaiman, Minister of Education. The Staff Excellence Awards was introduced in 2015 to recognise and reward the outstanding and valuable contribution of staff to the success of the University in achieving its strategic goals. This year, 2 staff received the Excellence Awards and 6 received the Special Mention in the respective categories for Teaching, Research and Administrative.
Earlier, a signing ceremony of the Addendum to the MoU between UTB and Amec Foster Wheeler (Brunei) was held. The MoU was first signed on 16 November 2013 and this Addendum renews the collaboration between the two organisations with expanded scope of cooperation. Professor Doctor Hajah Zohrah signed on behalf of UTB; while Amec Foster Wheeler was represented by its Local Business Development Manager, Dayang Leena Hariaty binti Haji Hasnan.
This was followed by the handing over of contribution from Schlumberger to UTB. The contribution was in the form of industry-standard Petroleum Engineering software’s, which will enhance the capability for teaching and learning at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and also research in the area of Petroleum Engineering in UTB. The Vice Chancellor of UTB received the contribution from Eric Voon, Managing Director of Schlumberger Brunei. Also present were Datin Paduka Doctor Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohd Salleh, Deputy Minister of Education, Doctor Haji Azman bin Haji Ahmad, Acting Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Education; and Doctor Awang Haji Norarfan bin Haji Zainal, the Rector of Sultan Sharif Ali Islamic University, UNISSA.
