Kuala Lumpur: His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah of Brunei Darussalam, during the 46th ASEAN Summit's Plenary Session, emphasized the significant advancements in ASEAN Community-building over the past decade. His Majesty highlighted the need to enhance intra-ASEAN trade, which has been affected by global economic uncertainties and trade disruptions, and stressed the importance of strengthening regional resilience against emerging challenges.
According to Radio Television Brunei, His Majesty welcomed Malaysia's initiative to prioritize intra-ASEAN trade during its ASEAN Chairmanship and the recent conclusions of the ASEAN Trade in Goods Agreement negotiations. Additionally, he looked forward to the early finalization of the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement, viewing these developments as crucial steps towards realizing ASEAN's full market potential and fostering a digitally connected economy.
The session was held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, attended by ASEAN Leaders and representatives from the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste. His Majesty underscored the importance of a coordinated regional response to natural disasters and climate change, advocating for the full implementation of ASEAN SHIELD and urging member states to ratify the agreement for the ASEAN Centre for Climate Change.
His Majesty also highlighted the significance of Timor-Leste's accession to ASEAN as a step towards deeper regional integration. He expressed support for the ASEAN Community Vision 2045, which aims to enhance ASEAN centrality and innovation over the next two decades.
His Majesty's arrival was welcomed by Malaysian Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the ASEAN Chair in 2025. Following the Plenary Session, His Majesty participated in the Retreat Session with ASEAN Leaders and Timor-Leste representatives.
