The ASEAN-United States Special Summit

His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam will attend the ASEAN-United States Special Summit, which will be held on 12th to 13th May 2022 in Washington D.C., United States of America. The Special Summit will be co-chaired by His Excellency Joseph R. Biden Jr., President of the United States of America, and His Excellency Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of Cambodia, as Chairman of ASEAN.

During the Special Summit, ASEAN-U.S. Leaders are expected to discuss on strengthening partnership between ASEAN and the U.S., as well as enhancing cooperation in various areas including COVID-19 response, education and people-to-people ties, as well as connectivity. They are also expected to exchange views on regional and international issues of mutual concern. The Special Summit will commemorate 45 years of ASEAN-U.S. relations, and look to deepen relations and further advance mutually beneficial cooperation, as well as welcome the U.S.’ continued commitment to ASEAN Centrality. The Special Summit will also build on the successful outcomes of the 9th ASEAN-U.S. Summit convened during Brunei Darussalam’s Chairmanship of ASEAN in 2021. ASEAN-U.S. Dialogue Relations commenced in 1977, and subsequently the relationship between ASEAN and the U.S. was elevated to a Strategic Partnership in 2015.
