Road accidents are among the major causes of death in Brunei Darussalam. In view of the increasing number of road accidents every year the authorities have taken various measures to address the issue and avoid undesirable incidents. The authorities have also increased efforts to prevent road accidents such as carrying out roadblocks and vehicle inspections. This is to ensure that no unauthorised modifications that break the law and regulations are made by vehicle owners. Besides that drivers should also obey traffic laws and regulations so that all vehicles driven on the roads are truly in good condition and safe. The matter was highlighted in the Khutbah Juma'at or Friday sermon titled, "Together In Maintaining Safety And Obeying Road Traffic Regulations."
In the sermon, the Imam or prayer leaders said Islam has taught several guidelines and practices to be used when starting a journey. One of them is to ensure the 'niyat' or intention that the travel is a religious act. Travellers should also recite 'doa or supplicate to Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala for a safe journey. The prayer leaders describe the 'doa as a weapon of the Muslims and a way to seek Allah's blessings for their intentions or requests and well protection from danger and the threats of humans, genies and Syaitan or the Devil. The prayers include reciting Surah Al-Fatihah, Ayatul Kursi and Surah Quraish.
