The 8th Convocation Ceremony of the Sultan Sharif Ali Islamic University, UNISSA this morning recorded the historic conferment of the honorary degree of Doctor of Islamic Finance to His Royal Highness Prince Doctor Haji Al-Muhtadee ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office and Pro-Chancellor of UNISSA. His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, the Chancellor of UNISSA consented to present the honorary degree of the Doctor of Islamic Finance to His Royal Highness as well as other Doctor of Philosophy or PhD, Masters, Bachelor and Special degrees, diplomas and certificates to 208 graduates. The ceremony was held at the International Convention Centre in Berakas.
At the Plenary Hall of the International Convention Centre, the reading of Surah Al-Fatihah was led by Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia Doctor Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Aziz bin Juned, the State Mufti.
Upon arrival, His Majesty was greeted by Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Hamzah bin Haji Sulaiman, the Minister of Education and Doctor Haji Norarfan bin Haji Zainal, the Rector of UNISSA, as the Chairman of the 8th UNISSA Convocation's Executive Committee. Also present was His Royal Highness the Crown Prince.
The event was further enlivened with the reading of Al-Quran's Surah Al-Khafi by Awang Abdul Qawiyuddin bin Suhaili, a Bachelor of Aqidah and Da'wah degree graduate. The reading of Al-Hadith was performed by Awang Muhammad Nuralif bin Haji Talib, Bachelor of Arabic Language degree graduate.
In his welcoming address, the UNISSA Rector among other things, outlined the development and achievements of UNISSA since its 7th Convocation, among them, a ten percent increase in students enrolment. This included an increase in the number of foreign students and the university's membership in the Association of Commonwealth Universities, ACU.
Doctor Awang Abdul Nasir bin Haji Abdul Rani, the Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Islamic Finance of UNISSA in reading the citation of the award said the leadership and many contributions of His Royal Highness have helped tremendously in developing and strengthening Islamic Finance not only in Brunei Darussalam but also at the international level.
His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam then delivered the Titah to confer the honorary degree of Doctor of Islamic Finance.
After that, His Majesty presented the honorary degree of Doctor of Islamic Finance to His Royal Highness the Crown Prince.

Form the 208 graduates feted at today's convocation ceremony, one received the Doctor of Philosophy degree or PhD in Shari'ah and another received a PhD in Arabic Language.
Since its establishment, UNISSA has achieved encouraging progress. This includes the Halal Science Bachelor Degree Programme which has received a very good response. The programme which is offered for the first time this year provides a platform for learning and teaching basics in Halal Science.
UNISSA is also very committed to the quality of proficiency in Arabic Language of students wishing to further their studies at the pre-graduate and post-graduate levels. The Arabic Language test system known as the International Arabic Language Testing System, IALTS which was designed based on the International Language Testing format and the Language Assessment System at foreign universities is among UNISSA's initiatives to enhance proficiency and skill in using Arabic Language among the university students.
In the effort to improve the quality of its students, UNISSA has expanded its strategic cooperation network with foreign universities by sending outstanding students to Student Exchange Programmes or to a one-year Study Programme overseas. For the first time this year, UNISSA has sent a group of students from the Arabic Language Bachelor Degree Programme to the Sultan Muhammad the 5th University in Morocco to gain further knowledge and experience in a new environment as part of measures to improve their ability to master Arabic.
To study the opportunity of cooperation in the teaching of Arabic Language, Islamic Studies, Laws and Calligraphy, in February this year, a delegation from UNISSA visited eight prestigious universities in India. The outcome of those visits saw UNISSA signing the Memoranda of Understanding with four renowned universities in India including the NALSAR University of Law which is also a prominent Law studies institution in the international arena.

Established in 2007, UNISSA has produced one thousand and two hundred thirty four (1,234) graduates in various disciplines or fields. Since offering the Islamic Studies Programmes in this region, the university has become an alternative choice among regional and international students to further their studies in Islamic studies.
