Brunei Darussalam Strengthens Security Ties with Russian Federation

Brunei Darussalam: Brunei Darussalam is committed to enhancing its long-standing ties with ASEAN Dialogue Partners, including the Russian Federation, particularly in the security domain. This was emphasized by Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Sufian bin Haji Sabtu, Deputy Minister for Security and Law at the Prime Minister’s Office and Deputy Chair of the National Security Committee, during the ASEAN-Russia Consultations of the High-Ranking Representatives for Security Issues. The consultations took place as part of the International Meeting of High-Ranking Officials Responsible for Security Matters recently held in Moscow, Russian Federation.

According to Radio Television Brunei, Brunei’s delegation participated in a discussion session focused on Information Security. This session was chaired by His Excellency S.V. Verishnin, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, and His Excellency D.G. Gribkov, Deputy Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation.

Additionally, a bilateral meeting was convened with His Excellency Igor Zubov, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of the Interior of the Russian Federation. During this meeting, both countries explored opportunities to strengthen cooperation in combating illicit drugs. This focus area is a priority outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding between the National Security Committee of Brunei Darussalam and the Security Council of the Russian Federation, which was renewed in April 2024. His Excellency Pengiran Muhammad Husaini bin Pengiran Penggawa Laila Bentara Istiadat Diraja Dalam Istana Pengiran Haji Alauddin, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Brunei Darussalam to the Russian Federation, was also present.
