Decarbonisation and Digital Integration Highlighted at 31st ASEAN Transport Ministers Meeting

Myanmar: The 31st ASEAN Transport Ministers (ATM) Meeting and Associated Meetings took place in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar, serving as a crucial platform for ASEAN Member States to assess progress and enhance collaborative initiatives aimed at fostering safe, efficient, and sustainable regional connectivity. Yang Berhormat Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Shamhary bin Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Mustapha, the Minister of Transport and Infocommunications, was among the attendees. Before the official opening, the ASEAN Transport Ministers and Heads of Delegation paid a courtesy visit to His Excellency Nyo Saw, the Prime Minister of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar.

According to Radio Television Brunei, the meeting was inaugurated by Prime Minister Nyo Saw and chaired by His Excellency Mya Tun Oo, the Union Minister for Transport and Communications of Myanmar, who will lead the ASEAN Transport Ministers Meeting in 2025. The ministers endorsed and adopted recommendations focusing on decarbonisation, environmental protection, digital solutions, and harmonisation efforts within the transport sector. The meeting also facilitated engagements with ASEAN Dialogue Partners, including China, Japan, and the Republic of Korea, reaffirming long-term cooperation and endorsing several deliverables and work plans.

On the meeting’s sidelines, the Minister of Transport and Infocommunications conducted a courtesy call with Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, the Secretary-General of ASEAN, to reaffirm a shared commitment to enhancing ASEAN transport cooperation, particularly in strengthening ASEAN-United Kingdom air transport engagement. The 31st ATM followed the 60th ASEAN Senior Transport Officials Meeting and Associated Meetings, which took place from 17th to 19th November 2025. Brunei Darussalam’s delegation also included Retired Captain Haji Mohamad Sarif Pudin Matseruddin, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Brunei Darussalam to Myanmar.
