Search underway for 10-year-old girl missing after Yom River bank collapses, house collapses

Officials are urgently searching for a 10-year-old girl who went missing after the Yom River bank collapsed, causing her house to collapse into the water. Yesterday (8 Oct 2014) in Sukhothai Province, the bank of the Yom River collapsed, causing a house to collapse into the water. One person died, one person was injured, and one person, a 10-year-old girl, is still missing. A life-threatening moment when people in the house had to run away. Before the incident, the person who filmed the clip was taking pictures of the Yom River bank that was gradually collapsing, but suddenly the entire house collapsed. The incident occurred yesterday afternoon in Tambon Khlong Krajong, Amphoe Sawankhalok, Sukhothai Province. After the incident, it was found that 3 people were buried in mud by their houses: 2 adults and 1 10-year-old girl. Rescue workers and villagers tried to help. People who were at the scene said that when they saw the bank of the Yom River starting to collapse, people in the house helped to pack up t heir things to bring them outside, but then the unexpected happened. Officials are trying to find and help people trapped under the rubble of a collapsed house with great difficulty because in addition to being crushed by the house, there is also mud covering them. At around 7 pm, rescuers were able to help one person, Mr. Pitak, age 45, who was seriously injured and had to use a ventilator at all times. Not long after, one person who died at the scene was found, Mr. Rachen, age 52. Officials have brought his body up, but the 10-year-old girl has not been found. Officers continued their search, but due to the darkness, the search became more difficult, forcing officers to decide to temporarily halt the search and plan to search again this morning (9 October). This morning, rescue workers and relevant agencies immediately began searching for the 10-year-old girl. They planned to split the forces of Sukhothai Border Patrol Police and rescue workers to search the scene. Another group took flat-bottomed boats along the Yom River, trying to avoid walking on the road along the Yom River in front of the house where the incident occurred because the road is hollowed out and there is fear that it will collapse again. In addition, officers also helped move belongings from other houses in the same area as the house where the incident occurred to reduce the weight on the bank to prevent further subsidence. Mr. Papon Sontham, Senior District Officer of Sawankhalok District, said that after a meeting to find the location of the missing girl, it is expected that she is stuck near the point where the injured and deceased were found yesterday. However, obstacles include the collapsed house and mud, making the search difficult. Still no sign of the man swept away by the flash flood. In Sop Moei District, Mae Hong Son Province, the missing person who was swept away by the flash flood 4 days ago has not been found. He is a villager from Huai Kong Kad named Nang No Khao, approximately 50-60 years old. However, the officers are not giving up and are still mobilizing forces to search continuously. Officers have spread out to search along the Mae Sam Laep River, starting from the scene of the incident, the village crossing, down the stream. Yesterday, they found a red sarong and headscarf on the bank of the Mae Sam Laep stream. Relatives of the missing person confirmed that it belonged to Ms. Nokhao. Officials suspect that the missing person's body may have gotten stuck under a large concrete slab that had piled up. The area has a strong rotten smell. Yesterday, officials used a backhoe to help lift the large concrete slab, but were not successful. This morning, the 36th Mobile Development Unit was contacted to bring in two more backhoes to lift the concrete slabs. It is believed that the missing person's body is stuck in the gap under the concrete slabs. Source: Thai News Agency
